Bilingualism
|
Bilingualism is an often used and misunderstood concept. The linguistic definition of bilingualism is the learning and the active use of two or more languages. Considerable research has been carried out in the last 40 years in determining the effect of bilingualism on the cognitive development of children. While the exact mechanism is not completely understood, there is no doubt that two-language immersion and a bilingual curriculum early in a child’s education are essential contributors to academic rigor. The acquisition of two languages helps the brain develop differently and stimulates mental flexibility, creativity, and originality of thought. Lately, there has been some evidence that bilingualism also delays old-age dementia and Alzheimer’s. |
