Fifth Grade Outdoor Education & Science Camp

During our students’ fifth grade year at KZV, they have an opportunity to put the science skills that they learn in the classroom into practice at Outdoor Education. This program is hosted by the YMCA at Camp Campbell, located in Boulder Creek, CA. The camp is perfectly situated in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which allows for our students to explore California’s natural wildlife and practice science skills, such as a leaf scavenger hunt to identify different plants. While at this overnight, four-day camp, our students take part in sing-a-longs, campfires, science-based hikes, group games, arts and crafts, and hands-on science activities. Our students never forget the friends that they make, the songs that they learn, and the learning experiences that bring science to life.

Sixth Grade Yosemite Trip

Every year our sixth graders look forward to attending the Yosemite Institute at Yosemite National Park. Once again, our students get to explore California’s natural landscape and wildlife in one of America’s greatest national parks. Students travel to Yosemite in February and stay in tent cabins for four days and three nights. The students practice science concepts by studying Yosemite’s scenic forests, topographic maps, and animal tracks. Along with practicing science skills, they learn team work by leading each other through "Spider Cave" and lining up in height order through a tight space. The students also enjoy playing in the snow, ice skating, sipping hot cocoa by the warm fire, and singing songs. This memorable learning experience is one our students cherish forever.

8th Grade Washington, D.C. Trip
Eighth grade is an exciting year for our students! Not only do they graduate and move on to prestigious high schools, but they get to end the school year with a memorable trip to our nation’s capital. Each May, our students travel to Washington, D.C. for a five day trip to explore America’s history and government, which they have studied during the school year. Students visit historical sites, such as the White House, the Capitol building, and the Lincoln Monument. Students also explore the various Smithsonian museums and famous sites like Ford’s Theater and Arlington National Cemetery. Additionally, students develop their social skills as they meet members of other schools while they discover the city. The trip to Washington, D.C. is one that commemorates their amazing friendships and education that they achieved through KZV.
