KZV Pre-School Head Teacher/Director Job Description

The Krouzian-Zekarian-Vasbouragan (KZV) Armenian School is looking for an Armenian American educator to assume the position of Head Teacher/Director for its Armenian Immersion Pre-School Program. The current enrollment age for the program is 2.6, with plans to accept younger children as KZV enters its next phase of development.  The position will begin either in January or August of 2009, depending on the qualifications and readiness of the successful candidate.

Required and Expected Qualifications:

·      The successful candidate must have at least a Bachelor’s (Master’s preferred) Degree in Early Childhood Education and must hold a license to operate a pre-school in the state of California.

·      S/he must have a love for children and their well being, for the Armenian language and culture, and for the importance of the preservation and perpetuation of this culture in the context of a pluralistic society such as the United States.

·      S/he must be a fluent speaker of Armenian (preferably of both the Western and Eastern dialects) and English, and consequently command a commensurate knowledge of traditional as well as modern early childhood literature, songs, and games pertaining to the cultures represented by both languages.

·       In addition to excellent interpersonal and social skills when working with children, the successful candidate must have the willingness and ability to work and communicate effectively with other KZV teachers, administrators, and with parents.

·      S/he must be knowledgeable in current as well as prominent theories and practices of Language Acquisition/Second Language Teaching and Learning, Bilingual Education, and of Curriculum Development in the context of Early Childhood Education. Willingness to add to this knowledge while on the job is a plus.

·      2/3 years of teaching/directorship experience with children 2.6-5 years of age, in Armenian or non-Armenian pre-school settings, is highly desirable.

·      Familiarity and experience with block building, water, sand, clay, multimedia art, and creative/free play is a definite plus.

·      Awareness of current normative and summative assessment practices in early childhood education, and knowledge of problems pertaining to transition from Pre-School to Kindergarten is expected.

The required work hours for this position are 7:30 am-3:35 pm weekly, following which the Head Teacher/Director will be in charge of the KZV Pre-School After-School Program (to last until 6:00 pm daily, depending on need).
